March's House & Garden article English Heritage features a Victorian villa which was transformed by interior designer Christopher Leach from a 'property-developer bland' London townhouse into an atmospheric urban retreat.

The brief was 'the feeling of a country house in London- English without the chintz.' Christopher Leach.

The Drawing Room features a large Tole shade finished in a New Bronze and gloss red paint combination. The Drawing Room is designed in two parts 'Christopher urged the owner not to have two sofa arrangements, but instead, in the side overlooking the garden to have a table with armchairs...;the owner often has breakfast here, yet it is also perfect for drinks or card games.' Also drawing on a distinctly English aesthetic, George Smith has used the 200^th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birthday as inspiration for their latest window setting.

"Having been to the Charles Dickens museum for research we have tried to recreate his living room and study. The study area features various writing paraphernalia and a green leather Captains Chair. Look closely and you will see references to his works and also a bust & picture of the great man himself." Ruth Herbert, George Smith.

The display features the Tilting Turning Table Lamp in brass with a pleat gathered green silk shade.

Charles Dickens' hitherto unappreciated interest in interior design has at last been documented by Hilary Macaskill, in Charles Dickens at Home, published by Frances Lincoln. Read more here.

Creating a house with a romantic English feel for a young family, Windsor chose a large Round Chandelier in Nickel for the lounge, adding Blue Silk Shades to the design. The chandelier was chosen for its 'unfussy elegance'.

A new experience

Part of the London Design Festival, Decorex starts on Sunday, seeing exclusive product launches from hundreds of design firms.

A free shuttle runs from Decorex to the Focus show at the Chelsea Harbour Design Center, where more inspiration is on display. Just a 5 minute walk from the Harbour, the Charles Edwards showrooms are well worth a visit.

New displays feature examples of customisations and bespoke work. Exclusive new designs are on display alongside the current collection in previously unseen finishes and combinations.

A custom 3-tier Pentagonal Lantern hangs over the staircase. This customisation is possible on all Charles Edwards hanging fixtures.

An example of a bespoke light sits above the work table. Specialised in brass manufacture our team will help you create an unique piece.

The sense of scale that the showrooms offer cannot be paralleled. Our current displays feature a collection of colossal sized lanterns. Pictured above the Monster Lattice Lantern sits in the window of the 582 showroom and measures in at just under 2 meters in height.

A Jumbo Adam Lantern hangs in the adjacent window, measuring just under one and a half meters in height.

In contrast the new Short Rumbold Sconce is one of the smallest designs, ideal for hallways and small spaces.

Redesigning the classic Charles Edwards Tole and Drum Shades, the Studded editions are available in finishes and combinations which are impossible on the original designs.

The Studded Drum shade is finished in Nickel and Powdered Bronze, the panelled design allowing the freedom to combine these metals.

The Studded Tole Shade is finished in Benjamin Moore 'Hale Navy' gloss paint and un-lacquered Pewter. The Pewter's low lustre and patinated silver tones offer an alternative warmth to Nickel.

The patina of the Pewter finish develops organically over time, adding brown low-lights to the low lustre silver tones. Bright Silver, Aged Silver, and Chrome are also achievable as finishes on the Studded designs.

Creating an Island Fantasy

Charles Edwards will be closed on Monday 29th August for the bank holiday and on Friday 2nd September for the Charles Edwards summer party. The summer bank holiday is host to the Notting Hill Carnival, bringing the colour of the Caribbean to the streets of London.

It seems apt to dedicate this post to Caribbean interiors, in particular the iconic designs of Oliver Messel, who defined an interior design style on the idyllic islands of Mustique and Barbados.

Most famous for designing Les Jolies Eaux, belonging to Princess Margaret, Mustique and the style of Messel quickly became synonymous with exclusivity and luxury.

Zinnia, named after the bright flower, is an original two-storey Messel hillside villa and features many of his trademarks, such as rooms open to the garden and pool.

Messel is known for his use of columns, used here to separate the dining and living space. A Charles Edwards Pineapple lantern painted in a bright red with brass detail now hangs in the space dividing the rooms.

The original Trompe l'oeil featuring columns, birds, and palms created by Messel adorns Zinnia's staircase.

Coccoloba is a more recent addition to Mustique, but draws inspiration from Messel's designs, utilising stonework exteriors and symmetry.

Fustic house dates back to the 17th Century and is widely regarded as Messel's greatest contribution to design in Barbados. Messel restored the coral stone structure, adding his trademarks to the great house.

White walls, a green floor, Palladian arches and fanlights all point to Messel's design in the Great House sitting room. The current scheme features Charles Edwards double arm Hurricane sconces.

Amanda Murray took Oliver Messel as inspiration for this house in Sandy Lanes, Barbados. The classically inspired double height portico accommodates a Charles Edwards Monster Blake lantern. The wooden fretwork is painted Messel green and is inspired by Chinese design.

The pool terrace sitting room has a 6 meter high vaulted ceiling with walls open to the elements. A series of large black hanging Pagaoda Bell lanterns and Regency Pineapple wall lanterns add a touch of Messel whimsy to the space.

On this entry porch in Nassau, David Easton uses a series of bespoke lanterns, made by Charles Edwards, finished in Verdigris. A modern approach to lighting...

Miranda Sinclair's World of Interiors September round up of modern fixtures features the New Pyramid shade. Shown in Nickel the New Pyramid shade has studded detailing on the struts and a frosted base.

The Pyramid shades are also available on Buchanan poles. The poles are made to the required height and width and are the perfect crowning feature for kitchen islands and games tables. A third shade can be added in the centre for larger spaces.

The Buchanan light has been featured on MTV's Teen Cribs. In the kitchen above two Buchanan lights are used over a large central island. See the link to the video below for a true sense of scale:

An editor's opinion

In House & Garden's new feature Rank and Style by Alexander Breeze, different designs of a similar nature, but with different price tags, are assembled. Featuring the cut down french gatepost lantern in faux patinated bronze, customised for a candle, with a hanging ring added to the roof, made exclusively for the the article.

Comparing the least and most expensive, the lantern from Ikea shown on the far left, and the Charles Edwards design on the right respectively, Susan Crewe, the editor evaluates the designs:

"There are mass-produced examples that will serve their purpose perfectly well in the short term, and there are beautifully crafted things made with infinite skill from durable materials that will not only last a lifetime but may increase in value... from experience, I would always recommend buying the best quality you can afford" Susan Crewe Editor House & Garden August 2011.

Finding inspiration with the Pearl Pineapple Lantern

The Pearl Pineapple lantern is featured in The World of Interiors July 2011 inspiration.

Designed by David Easton the Pearl Pineapple lantern was originally created for an Island Retreat in Nassau, documented in David Easton's book 'Timeless Elegance: The Houses of David Easton', Stewart, Tabori & Chang, New York 2010.

Pencil drawings by James Steinmeyer chart the conception and development of the Pearl Pineapple.

The finished lantern hangs like 'an exclamation point' in the round entrance hallway.

A symbol for welcome, friendship, and hospitality, the Pineapple is a natural choice as a centrepiece for a hallway or entertaining space.

Thomas Jayne uses the Pearl Pineapple in his hallway design for a 19th Century Greek Revival Philadephia Townhouse.

Within the theme of entertaining, Mario Buatta uses the Pearl Pineapple for this Manhattan Terrace. In the book 'New York Parties: Private Views' Jamee Gregory chronicles a dinner party for 34, starting with cocktails on the terrace.

A Lower Fifth Manhattan residence by S.R. Gambrel

Featured in July/August Elle Decor this New York residence has a classic sensibility epitomising the 'cross pollination' of uptown and downtown. Stephen's individual mix of modern and traditional furnishings, many of which he designs himself, transform this former department store.

The Large Square Drum Shades, finished in Nickel and Blue Eggshell Paint, create a harmonised proportion in the foyer.

In the master bath nickel Rectangular Deco Wall Lights on the mirror fit the design of the skylight, creating a clever lighting scheme.

A view to the Whitehouse

This week's post is inspired by Beth Herman's article on the addition of the 9th floor to the historic Hay-Adams Hotel. Beth provides an insight into the challenges of the design and build process which was only months in its execution.

Offering unique views over Washington, the Hay-Adams Hotel was also home to the Obamas in the weeks leading up to the President's inauguration. Michelle Obama even chose the hotel as the setting for her Vogue cover, photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

High Gloss Fashion

In this months magazines we have seen a trend for high gloss finishes for an uncompromising approach to elegant living.

House and Garden, June, features a small Tole Shade finished in Nickel and Gloss 'Nubian Brown' Paint in this bold dining room designed by Stephan Eicker and Gavin Houghton.

The June edition of Instyle magazine has a story on Tory Burch's New York apartment designed by Daniel Romualdez. The high gloss mint green floor in the kitchen is mirrored by the paint colour used on the large Charles Edwards Tole Shade.

Featured in the Master Bedroom is the small Nickel Firescreen, Square Reeded Table Lamps and a round Mesh Wastepaper Basket.

Creating your look with Charles Edwards finishes

The finishes section on the Charles Edwards website has now been expanded. Incorporating large images, descriptions and care instructions the finish pages will help you in creating and maintaining the right look for your lantern.

Conveying the finishes on the website is a big challenge. Whilst we take great care in getting the photography right, it is impossible to represent colours accurately on screen as computer monitors all vary. Of particular note is that hand finishes are by nature unique with characteristics that will be affected by many factors including the design they are applied to.

Distressed Gilt Lacquer is an example of a finish where the design of the lantern will affect the look of the finish. Designs with large metal sections will take on a more distressed look compared to more delicate frames. On the Lattice Lantern below you can see how the distressing is more visible on the roof than on the struts of the frame.

The close up of the Shell wall light below shows the uniqueness of the hand finished distressed gilt lacquer. No two lanterns in this finish will ever be identical.

In order to get the finish just right you may reference a lantern image on the website, a model from the showroom, or a previous order for us to match to. Every care will be taken to achieve the look you are after.

Different designs will emphasise highlights and lowlights of finishes more that others. Above the highlighted tones of Patinated Bronze are brought out on the ribs of the Hexagonal Treaty Port Bracket Lantern roof (LHS image). This contrasts to the Web Wall Light (RHS image) where the Patinated Bronze finish has less visible highlights.

One of our original finishes, Verdigris is a hand painted finish emulating an organically aged bronze, copper, or brass finish. Each of our Verdigris lanterns is unique in tone and patination. Similarly, Underside Bronze varies from light to dark tones and is a versatile finish. As such, we would always advise referencing an example of Verdigris or Underside Bronze you would like to achieve.

At Charles Edwards we also offer bespoke finishing. Should you wish us to match a finish not from our range we would ask you to send in a sample for our workshop to review.

Alternatively, you may specify any paint colour, there are many examples of designs with paint finishes on our website. Many of our clients reference Farrow and Ball, or Benjamin Moore. We offer a gloss, eggshell, matt, or antiqued finish on any paint colour.

April's edition of Luxe magazine features a 19th Century farmhouse in New Hope, Pennslyvania, renovated for an ''easy elegance". Interior design by Matthew Frederick.

Parts of the house date from the 1840's, with views looking out over 300 acres of preserved land.

"Refined feminine elegance was the goal for the entire space. But not anything too girly." M. Frederick, Luxe magazine. In the great room, formerly artist Paul Froelich's studio, Frederick used European white high gloss cabinetry. Two crystal Ralph Lauren lamps sit on the console and a Charles Edwards Parchment Drum Shade hangs above, emphasising the expanse of the double height room.

A Charles Edwards' Tall Table Lamp sits on the bedside table. The master suite draws on nature for its palette and features several of M. Frederick's furniture pieces.

A Royal Affair at the Mandarin Oriental

Royal Wedding fever is mounting and the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London, has responded by announcing an exclusive Royal Wedding Tour. The tour offers special access and hosted tours by first-hand family members and associates of the royal family to Kensington Palace, Chartwell, Spencer House, Althorp and Westminster Abbey.

The hotel has a long association with the Royal Family, including a Royal Entrance to Hyde Park. Last year The Royal Suite at the Mandarin Oriental was renovated by RPW Interior Design. Building on the hotels' Victorian heritage, RPW have created an elegant contemporary suite.

The art of boating

This Saturday sees the 157th Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. A short walk from the Charles Edwards' Kings Road showrooms the historic race course runs from Putney to Mortlake.

Mark Mills has written an interesting article looking at Rowing Eight Design from a Yacht Design Perspective. Read it here. As Bill Atkinson states it is interesting from a design perspective that "The field must now be considered virtually mature in that there will be no significant advances in hull design within the current scope of the rules of rowing". This contrasts strongly to Yacht design where there is the constant push to evolve design. A recent example of great yacht design is the Perle Noire featured below.

The Perle Noire is a jet black motoryacht with an equally attractive interior designed by Gabriel Bernardi, of Cootehill Bernardi. Upto ten guests can be accommodated onboard and entertained in three exterior social areas; the partially sheltered aft cockpit, the vast sundeck, and a bar adjacent to the spa pool.

"I have tried to get the balance right in creating a chic, timeless interior, in which a family might feel relaxed, but which is also perfect for entertaining. At the same time, I was determined to give the interior a distinctly nautical feel." Gabriel Bernardi Heesen annual 2010

Inspired by the interwar period Bernardi immersed himself in French Graphic art of the era.

"A reproduction deco interior would have been entirely unsuitable and so, except for some faithful reproductions of original French deco lighting in the salon (the Round Stepped Deco ceiling lights and the New Odeon wall lights, all finished in polished nickel), he included only contemporary references to the style in the furniture and fittings." This month's edition of Veranda features the Boxwood project, a prominent house in the Belle Meade neighbourhood of Nashville. Interior design by David Netto and renovation architecture by Gil Schafer.

The breakfast room of Boxwood features the large hanging Tole Shade. The inside of the shade has been painted a matt white and the outside an eggshell Black Paint. Brass detail on the rims and pendant undercuts the design's heritage fitting Boxwood's overall scheme of American Classicism, which benefitted from two different design approaches.

A new start to 2011

The New Year is here, with it is a preview of new designs which we hope will provide inspiration for the coming year.

The Silk Square Drum Shade is featured in February's House & Garden's Lighting Source Book.

Shown in 'Empress' Silk and Nickel the design can be specified with any Henry Bertrand Douppion silk colour and any metal or paint finish. The silk is handwoven and has a characteristic slubb. The design boasts reeded metal banding and a square 4 arm pendant.

Also new, Charles Edwards has launched a square ceiling canopy design. The Square Buchanan Canopy, Ref 65BB, is available in two sizes and co-ordinates perfectly with the Square Silk Drum Shade. The canopy is a shallow design with a stepped detail, which can be finished to match the hanging light and chain.

Charles Edwards is proud to introduce the Round Adelphi Light, available in two sizes, for either wall or ceiling use. An English 1930's lantern inspires this Charles Edwards design. Constructed in Brass with Incised Frosted Glass, the Round Adelphi light can be finished in any of our metal finishes, or any paint colour. Shown in Nickel finish.

The Buchanan Light with Silk Tole Shades was featured in Sunday’s Financial Times article ‘Potted History, English Style: The centerpiece of the games room must be the full-size billiards or snooker table.’ By Victoria Maw.

The Buchanan Light is ideal for lighting a snooker or billiard table as both the height and width can be specified, and additional shades added, to produce the correct illumination no matter the size of table, or room.

There are several factors to bear in mind when specifying a billiard or snooker table light, here are some tips:

The light should illuminate the table only, not the whole room.

The light should be centered along the table lengthwise. Some guides suggest for every foot of table the light should be five inches, so a six-foot table would require a 30-inch light. It is essential to avoid shadows on the table in the placement of the shades.

A general consensus is that the light should sit approx 36 inches above the table to avoid glare and not interfere with play. Another popular way to determine the height of the light is to hang the light level with the bridge of your nose.

Davy’s Wine Bar & Merchant by Nelson Design

The Jumbo Parchment Drum Shade was specified for Nelson Design’s Davy’s Wine Bar & Wine Merchants project in Canary Wharf. The shade is covered in Black Douppion Silk with Gilt Lining to compliment the Pewter Candelabra offering a sense of luxury and structure to the space.

Nelson Design’s brief “was to change the customer experience for the clientele… We needed to take the aesthetic into the 21st century, but still keep the traditional feel. The chandeliers were a perfect component in the mix, as well as being functional, as they contribute loads of ambient light. This month's Architectural Digest features a Charles Edwards' Alabaster Light in the bedroom of James Belushi.
